Here is an example of a devised performance evaluation. The candidate was given the stimulus "The closed door". Her chosen skill was acting. Rationale The theme we were given for our devised performance was the closed door.
We started off exploring this theme by developing five different freeze frames that explored this idea. The one I liked the best was about five different people trapped behind the closed door of a lift. We felt we could have developed this idea further by each of them revealing the details of their lives.
We had been reading Walking with Shadows in class and my group liked the idea of how a person can appear quite normal but as soon as their front door shuts they can live a very different life.
As well as working from a theme we also had to use a genre and we were given TIE. Before Drama evaluation example started work on our devised performance we did a lot of background research on what is involved in a TIE performance.

This made us realise the importance of choosing a subject that will appeal to the target audience. We had also read the play Too much punch for Judy. This helped us understand some of the techniques which could be used in a TIE project, such as multi-role, minimalist set, technical effects such as PowerPoints and the use of a narrator.
It was called Cow and was about the dangers of texting while you were driving. Once again this was very powerful and dramatic and it definitely got the point across to the audience.
After our research we had to decide on the story of our play. We had lots of ideas like someone who was bullied at school and self-harmed behind the closed door of their room but eventually we decided on the idea of divorce and broken families and the effect it can have on you when you are growing up.
We decided our target audience would be Year 9 as this is a time when things are changing in your life. We knew our play would fit in with the theme of the closed door because all the characters are very different from how they first appear.
Rhys hides behind the door of his bedroom, the mother and father appear happy in public but hate each other when they are in the house, and the father has an affair. Development Once we had chosen our storyline we had to think of which characters we were going to use.
There were five of us in the group. We decided that Rhys would play the part of a year-old, Corey would be the father but he would also act as the narrator to help give the background to the story and move events along.
I would play the part of the mother and Ceri and Lauren would play the stepparents. I was given the role of the mother because I love playing emotional, dramatic roles but also we decided the father should be quite a cold character and my style of acting would contrast well with Corey.
We did some hotseating where the class asked me questions. It made me think about how she had once loved her husband but, because she is strong, she will move on.
It also made me realise that mothers are human and sometimes they need to let their feelings out. Rhys played a typical year-old teenager — awkward and selfish. Finally, before we actually started writing the script, we did lots of improvisations to help us understand the characters and the different relationships eg we improvised the scene when the father first met the mother, we improvised a scene of the day that Rhys the son gets married and how they would behave.
We used some of these ideas in a final script. We decided to use a Proscenium Arch stage because this would allow us plenty of space and a minimalist set. The class had recently been to London to see Warhorse and I was impressed by the way they created lots of different locations through simple objects.
We also had the problem of how to create different locations. We used levels to create the house on stage right, the office on stage left and the middle area was left empty.
This could be used as a variety of locations eg the picnic in the park. In the TIE piece we watched, the use of film and sound was brilliant and definitely made the play more dramatic.Textual Evaluation (or Analysis) Essay; Writing about Literature; Writing Prompts.
